Shopping bagsAlmonte Square is a new shopping plaza located in the centre of unprecedented growth in Almonte, Ontario, in the township of Mississippi Mills, abutting Kanata, a high tech suburb in Ottawa's growing western region. Almonte Square serves a trade area estimated at 18,627 in 20111.

The trade area is affluent and underserved. In 2011, Mississippi Mills average household income is estimated at $91,0022. Depending on the type of product or service offered, the trade area could expand to draw on population from areas outside a 20-minute drive. These include the village of Carp with a 2010 population of 1,6753 and an average household income of $109,150 and Carlton Place, with a population of 10,039 which is growing toward Almonte.

Growth
• A new pro-business municipal administration, attractive land costs and levies and the introduction of a sewage treatment plant in 2012 are factors responsible for a boom in development taking place on land immediately north and surrounding Almonte Square (see growth map). 1135 new lots are in varying stages of approval over the next year or two, with an additional 87 lots to come. Lots include single-family residences and two multi-unit buildings, all together representing an additional 3,155 individuals living within 5 minutes of the plaza as building proceeds.4
• Almonte's current population is 4,600. It is estimated to reach 8,267 within the next decade.5
• 57% of Mississippi Mills residents commute to work, of whom close to half work in Ottawa. The new home developments at Almonte Square are attracting young dual income families, many of whom work in Ottawa as well as residents aged 50 plus on indexed pensions.
